Manchester Adult Education Service (MAES) offers a variety of courses designed to equip people with skills for employment.
These range from English and maths qualifications through to computer, digital and IT skills, early years and education, health and social care, community learning and ESOL.
Also on offer are a variety of employability short courses that focus on specific aspects of getting work ready such as interview skills, finding and applying for job roles and creating your CV and cover letter.

Careers and Progression
Our Prep for Work team and Careers and Progression Advisers provide lots of opportunities to improve your employment prospects including relevant careers information, advice and guidance in one-to-one careers conversations, as well as various employability workshops, webinars and courses.
Dyslexia Support
A bespoke programme for customers struggling to find employment. Support sessions are hosted by Forum Library and Wythenshawe Community Housing Group who provide one-to-one meetings with candidates looking for internships or apprenticeships.
The service provides further support to individuals through collaboration with training providers, the employer, work coach, disability employment adviser and the Early Help team.
Case Study
Following a difficult time in his life, Christopher Martin decided to brush up on his English skills in order to apply for a university course. As he lived in Wythenshawe, he joined a class at Manchester Adult Education, part of Forum Opportunities, to study Level 2 English. He said: “I was anxious at first; it was totally new, but my teacher was great at making us all feel relaxed and at ease. I received lots of support from the teacher and was directed to other support services if I needed them. This included help with careers advice and finding work.
“The resources were fantastic as well. Laptops were available if I needed one for online learning and the staff were really nice and helpful. I felt really empowered completing my course. It has given me a lot of confidence going into my next stage of education.”
Case Study
When I arrived at Manchester Adult Education (MAE) I was absolutely petrified but straight away, the staff made me feel welcome and did not judge me because my reading and writing were not very good. I have a degenerative muscular condition which means I can’t do physical work anymore.
The job centre referred me because I needed to improve my maths and English to improve my chances of getting a job. Since joining MAE, I have improved my maths and English, gained qualifications and improved my confidence immensely. The support I have received has been more than I could ever wish for with dyslexia. I have received career advice and I was encouraged to do voluntary work. I joined the Talk English Project as a volunteer and have started looking for jobs in support roles.
John’s tutor said: “John has also been a great help to the English team. He has worked voluntarily supporting teaching in entry level classes for more than 3 years. More recently he has organised an extra class for learners enrolled on entry level literacy courses at Forum Opportunities, where they can receive support to achieve success in English.
“Learners say that they find his journey inspiring and his insight helpful. John has also worked with speakers of other languages as part of the Talk English project and has just completed a Level 3 Award in Education and Training.”
